DESCRIPTION:

After a pair of unorthodox home shirts were released by Adidas in 2019 and 2020 for Mexico; their 11th home shirt release for ‘El Tri’ reverted back to the classic green! Moreover, a devastating background pattern was employed once again to maximum effect with the Adidas three stripe pattern down the sleeves being coloured red for the first time since the 2010-11 home shirt! This season would also be the first to bear the new national team crest. This shirt would be worn across three competitions -  the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2023 Gold Cup, and also during the 2022-23 Nations League where most notably, Mexico defeated Panama on 16th July 2023 to win the CONCACAF Gold Cup for a record 9th time; exercising the demons of the defeat in the 2021 Final. While their exit in the Group Stage at the World Cup was their worst showing at the World Cup since the 1978 World Cup – their clash with Argentina in Lusail Stadium on 26th November 2022 drew nearly 89,000 fans in what the most atmospheric game of the entire competition. In the Nations League, Mexico would go into 2024 with a semi-final to look forward to. This cycle of kits would spell the end of the Tata Martino era as he left the national team set up after Mexico’s exit at the World Cup in 2022.

THE SEASON(S):

Mexico had enjoyed a fine 2022 ahead of their 31st August 2022 friendly at home against Paraguay in Atlanta having lost just once in twelve outings, sealing their place at the World Cup in Qatar later in the year in the process, while the 2022-23 Nations League campaign began unbeaten in their opening two games.

Unfortunately however for Tata Martino’s side, they would be beaten by Paraguay with preparation for the World Cup winding down to the final four friendlies. Mexico would defeat Peru and Iraq, but defeats to Colombia and Sweden would cast doubts over how far they could really go in Qatar having exited the competition in the Round of 16 in each of the last seven World Cup’s.

Mexico would be drawn in Group C alongside Saudi Arabia, Poland and tournament favourites – Argentina. After Saudia Arabia’s stunning victory over Argentina earlier in the day; Mexico and Poland had the chance to make a huge stride towards the Round of 16 in Doha, however, neither side could take advantage as a goalless draw played. Poland would move level on points with Saudi Arabia following their 2-0 win on the afternoon 26th November which put the spotlight on Lusail Stadium as nearly 90,000 fans came together to see Mexico and Argentina clash.

Neither nation could find an opening with an hour played before Lionel Messi’s strike sunk the Mexican morale en route to an eventual 2-0 defeat. Mexico’s qualification hopes were now out of their hands, and would need Argentina to beat Poland while defeating Saudi Arabia. While Argentina defeated Poland 2-0, Mexico needed a 3-0 win over Saudi Arabia, and led 2-0 until the 95th minute, before conceding a goal in stoppage time to all end their journey at the Group Stage for the first time since 1978.

The fallout of the World Cup would see Tata Martino part ways with the national side and his compatriot – Diego Cocca replaced him in 2023 with the Gold Cup to look forward to in the Summer.

The national side got back together for the first time since the World Cup for the Nations League clashes in March 2023 and while Cocca was victorious in his debut in the dugout when he oversaw the 2-0 win over Suriname, in his home debut, he could only watch on as Mexico and Jamaica battled to a 2-2 draw in Mexico City. The results however were enough to guide Mexico to the 2022-23 Nations League Semi-Final’s where they would play against the United States just ten days before the Gold Cup started.

The 19th April Continental Clasico against the United States ending 1-1 in their Nations League dress rehearsal. An intense summer lay ahead as there was firstly the pair of June 2023 friendly matches against Guatemala and Cameroon that yielded a 2-0 win and 2-2 draw respectively. Up next came the Nations League Semi-Final on 15th June, however the game would be a disaster as they were beaten 3-0 in Paradise, Nevada. The game would also spell the end of Diego Cocca’s stint in charge and Jaime Lozano was quickly brought in on an interim basis to navigate the Gold Cup campaign.

Before Mexico started their quest for a 9th Gold Cup title; they would secure 3rd place at the Nations League when they beat Panama 1-0 on 18th June. Mexico would take on Honduras in their Gold Cup opener and would come through with a 4-0 win before seeing off Haiti 3-1 to seal qualification – making the Match-Day 3 defeat to Qatar inconsequential.

Their opponents in the quarter final would be Costa Rica, and Mexico would prevail 2-0 and then in the semi-final against Jamaica on 12th July, they would win 3-0 in the same stadium they were beaten by the same score against the USMNT less than a month earlier. In the final on 16th July; Mexico would defeat Panama 1-0 to claim a record 9th CONCACAF Gold Cup!

After a deserved break; Jaime Lozano’s side regrouped for the pair of friendly’s against Australia and Uzbekistan in the United States where a pair of exciting 2-2 and 3-3 draws respectively unfolded. On 14th October, Mexico would beat Ghana 2-0 and then three days later; they would battle to another 2-2 draw – this time against Germany!

In the 2023-24 Nations League quarter final 1st Leg against Honduras – Mexico would be beaten 2-0 before recouping the scoreline in the 2nd Leg, before completing the turnaround when they won the penalty shootout to seal their place in the semi-final in 2024. Mexico’s final game in 2023 would end in defeat unfortunately as they fell to a second consecutive 3-2 defeat to a streaking Colombia side who made it 19 games in a row without defeat.
