DESCRIPTION:
Newcastle United and Adidas’ 14 season relationship would climax at the conclusion of the 2009-10 season where the team would secure a return to the Premier League! Puma would be the kit supplier to guide ‘The Magpies’ into the 2010’s and beyond, and this debut home shirt successfully integrated their 2010-11 template with the black and white stripes that are synonymous with Newcastle. The base was comprised of the classic striped formation while the side panels separated the sleeves with white slashes and the sleeves themselves help form the signature star shape collar! This would also be last full season to bare the Northern Rock sponsorship. This would be the last Newcastle United home shirt to be worn by the likes of: Sol Campbell, Shefki Kuqi, Kevin Nolan, Wayne Routledge, Jose Enrique and Joey Barton as the club continued to transition following Alan Pardew’s mid-season appointment as the clubs new manager.
THE SEASON:
12 months on from suffering the indignation of being relegated from the Premier League; Chris Hughton would successfully navigate Newcastle United to EFL Championship glory in 2009-10 and return ‘The Magpies’ to the English top flight; racking up 102 points and 30 victories along the way!
Staying in the Premier League was going to be another task altogether, however, the squad would be reinforced by the likes of: James Perch, Dan Gosling, Sol Campbell, Cheick Tiote, Hatem Ben Arfa and Shefki Kuqi.
Just as their last season in the Premier League began with; it would be the task of visiting Old Trafford to take on Manchester United. The Monday Night opener would end in a 3-0 defeat; however, the result was quickly forgotten as they swatted Aston Villa aside 6-0 at St James’s Park on 22/08/2010!
After a brilliant opening 11 games saw them sit proudly in 5th place, a winless run of 5 games would cost Chris Hughton his job and he would be replaced by Alan Pardew in early December. Despite the blockbuster £35 million of sale Andy Carroll to Liverpool at the end of January and amidst a litany of draws in the 2011 portion of the season; Newcastle would comfortably retain their status as a Premier League club following a brilliant 12th place finish!
The notable players that season were:
