DESCRIPTION:
In Nike’s first contribution to Inter Milan of the 2010’s, they really stepped into a new work with this elaborate and quite frankly incredible home shirt! The traditional stripes became serrated while the blue stripes formed via a pixelated effect to create one of the most unique ever Internazionale home shirts in history! Much like the 2008-09 strip, this full ensemble leant more on the use of the blue than black, and also used a v-neck collar, however, the collar has been coloured black in this instance. This season of shirt’s would be the last to be worn by club legend – Marco Materazzi, as he retired from the sport following the conclusion of the season.
THE SEASON:
Jose Mourinho would depart from his squad in tears after having guided them to their legendary treble in 2009-10, with the most hugest of shoes to fill came in Rafa Benitez, the Spaniard taking the reins after 6 hugely successful years with Liverpool.
The first test of his reign began with a clash against the biggest thorn of Inter’s side in the last few years – AS Roma. Their Supercoppa Italiana clash on August 21st at San Siro ended in a definitive victory for Internazionale as they prevailed 3-1! Regrettably, his side wouldn’t be so prolific in their UEFA Super Cup meeting against Atletico Madrid on August 27th as they were beaten 2-0 by the Europa League winners.
The bid to make a 5th successive title defence began well enough, however, by the late autumn/early winter period, dissension between the new manager and his team was becoming more and more apparent, and even though Benitez masterminded the capture of the FIFA World Cup when they defeated TP Mazembe in the December 18th finale in Abu Dhabi. Benitez was relieved of his duties on December 23rd and he was replaced by Leonardo to guide them through the 2011 portion of the season.
After making very little by way of signings in the summer, Inter’s squad were bolstered by the arrivals of: Giampaolo Pazzini, Andrea Ranocchia, Houssine Kharja and Yuto Nagatomo all arriving in the January transfer window.
The team’s form would significantly raise in the 2011 portion of the season, and while they could only finish in 2nd place behind neighbours AC Milan; Inter would reduce the deficit to just 6 points as they won 17 out of their 23 games league games in 2011. Furthermore, they would successfully retain the Coppa Italia title; again, beating Roma at the semi-final stage, before seeing off Palermo 3-1 in the final.
Their Champions League defence was disappointing as they fell to Schalke in the quarter final. They would be involved in arguably the best contest of the tournament proper, when they defeated Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 in the group stage, and in a repeat of the 2010 Final, they would defeat Bayern Munich in an epic Last 16 showdown.
Samuel Eto’o would enjoy an incredible season as he scored 37 goals in all competitions, which was a career best for the legendary Cameroonian striker! Pazzini was also a shrewd piece of business as he supplied 11 goals despite only joining in January. Despite a very commendable job at the helm, Leonardo would resign as Inter boss at the end of season, while Marco Materazzi also called time on his glittering career.
The notable players that season were:
Goran Pandev, Samuel Eto’o, Diego Milito, David Suazo, Giampaolo Pazzini, Phillipe Coutinho, McDonald Mariga, Houssine Kharja, Wesley Sneijder, Dejan Stankovic, Esteban Cambiasso, Thiago Motta, Javier Zanetti, Christian Chivu, Walter Samuel, Lucio, Maicon, Ivan Cordoba, Andrea Ranocchia, Yuto Nagatomo Julio Cesar, Luca Castellazzi, Paolo Orlandoni
