THE SEASON:
After a remarkable 2005-06 season where ‘The Blues’ became only the second side in Premier League history to successfully retain the Premiership title; the powers that be at Stamford Bridge wasted no time in further bolstering the team as they set their crosshairs on the Champions League. World class acquisitions: Michael Ballack, Andriy Shevchenko and Ashley Cole were added, while Salomon Kalou, Jon Obi Mikel and Khalid Boulahrouz were also signed to further fortify the squad!
The champions got their second title defence underway with a 3-0 win at home against Manchester City, however, hitherto unseen chinks in the seemingly impenetrable Chelsea armoury revealed themselves early in the season as they fell to Middlesbrough and Tottenham Hotspur in 2006. Moreover, they would see their talismanic goalkeeper – Petr Cech suffer a devastating a head injury against Reading on October 14th; in spite of these set-backs; ‘The Blues’ were still battling tooth an nail with Manchester United at the top of the table.
After winning just one of their first 3 league games in 2007; the club would embark on a 9 match winning streak as the club battled on 4 separate fronts! During this epic tilt, they would even reduce the gap with United to just 3 points when they defeated Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 on April 2nd; in the end however, draws in each of their last 5 games would see them fall just short in their quest to win a 3rd straight Premier League title!
Although the season began with a defeat to Liverpool in the FA Community Shield; the domestic cup competitions were dominated by Chelsea in 2006-07! The League Cup would be won for the 2nd time in 3 seasons on 25/02/07 when they defeated Arsenal 2-1 in the infamous final that saw 3 players sent off at the death! And then on the 19th May, in the first ever FA Cup Final to take place at the new Wembley Stadium; Chelsea would exact some revenge on Manchester United by defeating Sir Alex Ferguson’s side 1-0 After Extra Time!
The UEFA Champions League would sadly end in another tale of semi-final heartbreak at the hands of Liverpool in the semi-final when they were beaten on penalties at Anfield. Along the way however, there would be an impressive pair of Group Stage showings versus Barcelona; defeating the reigning champions 1-0 at Stamford Bridge and then drawing 2-2 at the Camp Nou! Jose Mourinho would also enjoy a winning return versus FC Porto in the Last 16, while Valencia were dramatically edged out in the quarter final!
