DESCRIPTION:
Unlike the previous Lazio shirts made by Puma, this effort, while following Puma’s template that season, would use white as the secondary colour, while the blue took a more duskier shade also, while interestingly, the shiny material allows the blue a retain a vibrancy of its own. The applications continue to be applied with felt; another feature of the Puma shirts made in the early 2000’s.
THE SEASON:
After the double blow of losing their Serie A title and seeing Roma become champions; Dino Zoff was given the summer to add to his fine body of work since managing the club from January 2001. He would oversee a summer of huge moves with club legends: Juan Sebastian Veron, Pavel Nedved and Marcelo Salas all moving on, while mouth watering talents: Gaizka Mendieta, Darko Kovacevic, Stefano Fiore, Ivan De La Pena, Jaap Stam and Fabio Liverani all came in to fill in the voids left by those huge personalities. Regrettably, the new side would not click straight away, and would not win their first league game until October. Their high points of the season came in the form of a 5 match winning run in late 2001, and then at the end of the season, where they won 7 of their last 11 games; most notably, defeating Inter Milan 4-2 on the final day of the season; preventing Inter from winning that season’s Serie A title! This would be the last Lazio shirt to be worn by the likes of: Hernan Crespo, Diego Simeone, Karel Poborsky, Dino Baggio and Gaizka Mendieta, who lasted just the one season with Lazio.
The notable players that season were:
Hernan Crespo, Claudio Lopez, Simone Inzaghi, Darko Kovacevic, Stefano Fiore, Karel Poborsky, Ivan De La Pena, Cesar, Lucas Castroman, Dejan Stankovic, Fabio Liverani, Giuliano Giannichedda, Gaizka Mendieta, Diego Simeone, Dino Baggio, Giuseppe Pancaro, Jaap Stam, Fernando Couto, Massimo Oddo, Giuseppe Favalli, Alessandro Nesta, Sinisa Mihajlovic, Paolo Negro, Francesco Colonnese, Angelo Peruzzi, Luca Marchegiani
