DESCRIPTION:

After a breath-taking quadruple of shirts Nike and Jordan put together for PSG in the previous season; they may have surpassed themselves with the set crafted for the new season! Also bearing the new sponsor of All Accor; the 3rd shirt is the jewel of the crown; owing to the shirt used 1989-90 season, this is an incredible throwback! Using the blue and red stipes down the left side of the chest, this shirt is blessed with the collar and the use of the retro Nike swoosh and wording. Moreover, the shirt features the nuance of faint diagonal grey stripes, and the word ‘Paris’ embossed into the blue and red stripes; altogether creating one of the best shirts released of the season.

Ligue 1 would of course be one of the league's in Europe where the top-flight was not resumed following the Coronavirus pandemic and PSG would be crowned as the 2019-20 Ligue 1 winners by virtue of their Points-Per-Game, however, with a 12 point lead and a game in hand before the league was brought to a halt – it was only a matter of time before they were crowned champions. The 2019-20 season would be the last for club legends such as – Edinson Cavani, Thiago Silva, as well as Thomas Meunier and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting,

THE SEASON:

Thomas Tuchel’s debut season in the Paris Saint Germain hot-seat whilst imperious at times, would ultimately end as a slight disappointment despite Ligue 1 being defended by an incredible 16 point margin and a sixth consecutive Trophee des Champions triumph; as both the domestic cups were relinquished and most damming – the upset at the hands of Manchester United in the Last 16 of the Champions League where they squandered a 2-0 lead from the 1st Leg to lose the tie on away goals following a disastrous showing at home in the 2nd Leg.

A series of established players and young players were shown the exit in the summer of 2019 including – Gianluigi Buffon, Dani Alves, Adrien Rabiot, Kevin Trapp, Alphonse Areola, Moussa Diaby, Timothy Weah, Giovani Lo Celso, Grzegorz Krychowiak, Christopher Nkunku and Jese. Their replacements would be more than adequate however as Ander Herrera and Mitchel Bakker arrived on respective free transfers while the outlay was spent on – Pablo Sarabia, Abdou Diallo, Idrissa Gueye and Keylor Navas and there would also be the loan signings of Sergio Rico and Internazionale’s captain – Mauro Icardi!

PSG’s quest for a ninth Ligue 1 crown began on 11th August 2019 at home against Nimes where the champions cruised to a 3-0 win. In their next outing against Rennes however; PSG would suffer a stunning 2-1 defeat. Although the champions would win their next four games – defeating Toulouse, Metz, Strasbourg and Lyon without conceding a goal; ‘Les Parisiens’ would lose their first league game at home since 12th May 2018 when Reims won 2-0 on 25th September 2019. The defeat lent itself to another run of four straight wins that claimed the scalps of Bordeaux, Angers, Nice and then Marseille in the ‘La Classique’ on 27th October 2019 to go 9 points clear at the top of the table! Thomas Tuchel’s side would suffer their third league defeat of the season on 1st November 2019 when they were beaten 2-1 by Dijon; however, this defeat would be their last of the season.

The last six games of the 2019 would yield six wins to conclude the decade of the 2010’s on top of Ligue 1 with a 10 point lead ahead of 2nd place Marseille. Their first league game of 2020 would be a game of the season contender at home against Monaco on 12th January where the contest ended 3-3. They would play the side from the Principality again just three days later where they won 4-1 in the rearranged fixture. Lille, Montpelier, Nantes and Lyon would all be beaten before another game of the season contender was played away against Amiens on 15th February 2020 where the hosts went 3-0 up within 40 minutes, only for the game to end 4-4! A another wild classic would unfold when PSG hosted Bordeaux in their next outing on 23rd February 2020 when the champions won 4-3 and unbeknownst to anyone at the time – in their final league game of the season, they would defeat Dijon 4-0 on 29th February 2020.

On 13th March 2020, the Ligue 1 season was suspended following the outbreak of Covid-19 in France and on 28th April 2020; the government announced that the league would not resume at all for the 2019-20 season. Consequently, PSG were awarded the 2019-20 Ligue 1 title as the league leaders at the suspension of the season with the most points won per game.

The 2019-20 curtain raiser took place in Shenzhen, China on 3rd August 2019 when Paris Saint Germain ousted Rennes 2-1 to win the 2019-20 season’s first piece of silverware. The win marked their seventh successive victory in the showpiece fixture!

PSG would regain the Coupe de France just a season after relinquishing the title after their upset in the final against Rennes in 2019. In their first game of 2020 – the former champions defeated sixth tier – ESA Linas-Montlhery 6-0 to reach the Round of 32. In the clash with Lorient; PSG would win 1-0 to set up a meeting with Pau FC from the third tier. Unsurprisingly, Thomas Tuchel’s side would prevail; winning 2-0, however, their statement wins would come in the quarter and semi when Dijon were beaten 6-1 and then Lyon by a 5-1 scoreline to set up a meeting in the final against Saint-Etienne which would take place on 24th July 2020. In their first game since 11th March 2020 – Paris Saint Germain would lift the Coupe de France for a 13th time thanks to Neymar’s goal in the 1-0 win at the Stade de France.

The last ever edition of the Coupe de la Ligue began in the 4th Round for Thomas Tuchel’s side and they swept aside Le Mans 4-1 on 18th December 2019. In the quarter final on 8th January 2020; PSG crushed Saint-Etienne 6-1 at the Parc des Princes before defeating Reims 3-0 in the semi final on 22nd January 2020 to set up a final against Lyon. Originally scheduled for 4th April 2020; the game would not be played until 31st July 2020 where PSG scooped up the domestic clean sweep of trophies after beating Lyon 6-5 on penalties! The 2019-20 capture of the League Cup would mark their 9th capture of the title making them most successful team in the history of the competition.

After three consecutive eliminations from the Champions League in the Last 16 – no matter how much success in France the club achieved; the critical review of their season would be determined by their performance in the competition which has long eluded them. They would take their place in a very testing Group A where they were drawn alongside Club Brugge, Galatasaray and none other than Real Madrid! Their marker of intent would be laid on Match-day 1 when they beat Real Madrid 3-0 at home! They would leverage that win by seeing off Galatasaray and then completing the double over Club Brugge ahead of the reverse fixture with Real Madrid. ‘Les Parisiens’ would come from 2-0 down to claim a 2-2 draw and would end the Group Stage by beating Galatasaray 5-0 at home to top the group by 5 points! Moreover, their return of 16 points from 18 made it their best ever Group Stage performance in the Champions League since the format changed to 3 points for a win!

Their opponents in the Last 16 would be against Thomas Tuchel’s former side - Borussia Dortmund side who had just acquired the red hot Erling Haaland and a heated 1st Leg in the Rhineland on 18th February 2020 ended 2-1 to the hosts. Armed with Neymar in the Round of 16 for the first time since his world record transfer move in 2017 and his goals in both legs would help PSG progress 3-2 on aggregate after the 2nd Leg was won 2-0 in an empty Parc des Princes.

In August 2020, The Champions League was given the green-light to resume as one legged fixtures entirely in Portugal where PSG took on Atalanta in the quarter final. PSG’s profligacy nearly cost them as they were 1-0 down until the 90th minute when goals from Marquinhos and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting earnt a last gasp 2-1 win on 12th August 2020. In the semi-final, they would meet RB Leipzig who had upset Atletico Madrid to reach the semi-final. Marquinhos and Juan Bernat would bo on target again as was Angel Di Maria as PSG reached their first ever Champions League Final!

Standing in the red corner on 23rd August 2020 was a Bayern Munich side who had beaten Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona by 8-2 scores and eliminated Chelsea 7-1 on aggregate in the Last 16. Unfortunately, for Thomas Tuchel and Paris Saint Germain, they would fall just short in a tense final where Bayern Munich won 1-0.
