DESCRIPTION:

Umbro would take the direction of Rangers’ home shirt away from the modern contemporary designs of the late 2000’s and would instead bring things back to basics ahead of the decade of the 2010’s with their 2010-11 season home shirt, and one could make the argument that this is the best of the bunch! Using the concept of the classic polo shirt; this shirt is strictly made of just a white collar and a blue backdrop and the result is both a minimalist and timeless classic! This would also be the first season that Rangers’ shirts were sponsored by Tennant’s as the club successfully retained both the Scottish Premier League and Scottish League Cup titles! This would also be the final season of Walter Smith’s fine 2nd spell in charge of the club!

THE SEASON:

Rangers would make it back-to-back domestic doubles in 2009-10 as they successfully defended the Scottish Premier League title and captured the Scottish League Cup; overcoming heartbreak in the final in 2009!

The 2010-11 season, Walter Smith’s already announced final season at the helm, would begin with losing their top goal-scorer from 2009-10 in Kris Boyd, meanwhile Nacho Novo also returned to his native Spain after 6 fine seasons with the club. The burden of replacing their goals would be entrust to new the arrivals of – James Beattie and Nikica Jelavić.

Rangers got their 2nd successive defence of the SPL title by going unbeaten in their opening 12 games; winning 8 and drawing 4, however it was their 2-1 win over Celtic on 13/10/10 that gave them a 1 point advantage over Celtic, in what was a sign of how close this title race would be. 2011 would be a story of a few wins and then a loss, before a magnificent 10 game unbeaten tilt to end the season saw them crowned as champions of Scotland for a 3rd successive season!

While Celtic would defy Rangers en-route to winning the Scottish Cup, Rangers would get their hands on cup silverware of their own at Celtic’s expense, when they successfully defended the Scottish League Cup by Celtic in the March 20th Final! After dropping out of the Champions League at the Group Stages, they would bow out of the Last 16 of the Europa League against PSV Eindhoven in a tense 1-0 defeat over 2 Legs.

The notable players that season were:

James Beattie, David Healy, Nikica Jelavic, El Hadji Diouf, Kenny Miller, Kyle Lafferty, David Healy, Steven Naismith, Vladimir Weiss, Steven Davis, Maurice Edu, Lee McCulloch, Kirk Broadfoot, Saša Papac, David Weir, Madjid Bougherra, Steven Whittaker, Allan McGregor
