DESCRIPTION:

In yet another classic Umbro Manchester City alternate strip; this one may stand at the head of the pack! Throwing back to one of City’s classic change attires: the red and black stripes; this would be the first time since the 2003-04 season that the design was called upon; unlike the iterations used earlier in the century, this effort really and truly draws from the shirt used when the club won the FA Cup in 1969; truly fitting, given that the club would enter the season as defending FA Cup holders!

THE SEASON:

The Sheikh-Mansour regime at Manchester City continued to move from strength to strength as they finished in a Premier League era high of 3rd place and ended a 32 year trophy drought (not including 1st Division titles)! The club would not rest on their laurels however, and another busy transfer window saw the mouth-watering arrivals of: Gael Clichy, Stefan Savic, Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasir and Owen Hargreaves join an already frighteningly talented squad. Their Community Shield defeat to Manchester United would be a sign of the exhilarating season that was to come! Their start to the league campaign would a marker of their intent to go the whole-hog this season; going unbeaten in their opening 14 league games, winning 12 of them, including a 5-1 demolition of Tottenham on August 28th, and an incredible 6-1 win over Manchester United on October 23ro to create 5 point gap at the top of the table. They would narrowly miss out on reaching the Last 16 of their debut Champions League campaign; after being drawn with: Bayern Munich, Villarreal and Napoli, they would fall short of 2nd place by just 1 point, in the Leagu Cup however, they would have a semi-final date with Liverpool to look forward too in 2012. The New Year would begin with another clash against United, this time in the FA Cup, and again the score would end 3-2 in favour of ‘the Red Devils; the losses at the start of January would not perturb ‘The Cityzens’ as they and United had 54 points apiece at the end of January. Although Liverpool would edge them in the EFL Cup semi-final; City would win 5 from their next 6 league games, however, a run of 3 games without a win saw United go 8 points clear with 6 games to spare. City would rally and defeat United at the Etihad on April 30th to move past the champions on goal difference, and this battle would go to the final day of the season! United thought they had successfully defended the title, however, with City losing 2-1 to QPR, the dying embers of the game saw Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero scoring in stoppage time to win Manchester City their first ever Premier League title!
