DESCRIPTION:

After a couple of classic home shirt templates, Umbro’s third offering for West Ham United’s home shirt was more contemporary with its half cut blue sleeves and two-tone chevron design! This shirt seemingly changes hue under light, with the shade going from claret to a more purple-esque shade! This is no small part down to the chevron which is just a touch darker than the main body of the shirt. This shirt will be best remembered for West Ham’s fine home form against the ‘Big 6’, where at home, they defeated defending champions Chelsea as well, they held: Manchester United and Arsenal to draws, and on the road, where they held both Chelsea and Tottenham to draws in the respective London Derbies, and even beat Spurs at Wembley Stadium in the League Cup Fourth Round!

THE SEASON:

West Ham United were brought back down to earth in 2016/17; finishing in 11th, some way away from the heady heights of 7th from the prior season. To aid Slaven Bilic was the closure to the Dimitri Payet saga and the benefit of a season that would start in August, not late July. As always, ‘The Hammers’ were busy in the transfer market and joining the club would be experienced and proven Premier League talents with international pedigree in the form of: Pablo Zabaleta, Marko Arnautovic and Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez and Joe Hart who came in on loan from Manchester City!

West Ham would not have an easy task on Match-Day 1 as they went to Old Trafford on Super Sunday and were beaten 4-0 by Jose Mourinho’s side. It would be a torrid August for West Ham as they would also lose to Southampton and Newcastle United. On their return from the international break on September 11th, they would claim their first win of their league season when they beat Huddersfield Town 2-0, they’d then reach the 3rd Round of the EFL Cup as they beat Bolton Wanderers 3-0 on September 19th. A valiant 3-2 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur would come next as they battled from 3-0 down at The London Stadium on September 23rd and the month would end with a 1-0 over Swansea City; leaving them either side of the top 10 and the drop zone by 2 points.

Sadly, this would set the stage for a run of 8 games with a victory in the league and the midst of which ultimately cost Slaven Bilic his job as he was relieved of his duties on November 6th following West Ham’s 4-1 defeat at home against Liverpool two days earlier. It should be noted that he did guide the team to the quarter final of the EFL Cup following a stunning 3-2 win over Tottenham ironically, where they would again have to come back from 2 goals down on October 25th.

David Moyes would be appointed as Bilic’s successor, but he was powerless as his debut in the West Ham dugout would be a 2-0 defeat away to Watford on November 19th. He’d earn a 1-1 draw with Leicester City in his home debut on November 24th, however, a 4-0 defeat to Everton in their next outing set the stage for a murderer’s row of games against: Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal. They would battle to an admirable 2-1 defeat away to champions elect, City, before stunning the defending league champions Chelsea 1-0 on December 9th! They’d then hold their EFL Cup opponents: Arsenal to a goalless draw at the London Stadium 4 days later. Their momentum would see them next beat Stoke City 3-0!

Their EFL Cup journey would end in the rematch with Arsenal on December 19th, before falling 3-2 to Newcastle in a thrilling back-n-forth affair on December 23rd. Luckily, there would be no Christmas hangover as ‘The Hammers’ embarked on their best spell of the season; starting with a 3-3 draw away to Bournemouth, they came into 2018 with a fine 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion. A quick turnaround 2 days later yielded a 1-1 draw Spurs at Wembley Stadium, before being held to a goalless draw in the 3rd Round of the FA Cup by Shrewsbury Town.

They’d return back to league action to defeat Huddersfield 4-1 at the John Smith’s Stadium, before edging past Shrewsbury in the Cup Replay 1-0 on January 16th. Whilst the FA Cup journey ended on January 27th against Wigan Athletic, there would also be home draws with Bournemouth and Crystal Palace to end a very busy and productive January. The summation of their efforts brought them to 12th place in the table and 4 points clear of the relegation zone.

February would see a 2-0 win over Watford sandwiched between defeats to Brighton and Liverpool, and then follow up losses to Swansea and Burnley had them just 2 points clear of 17th placed Southampton, whom they were set to do battle with next.

David Moyes’ side would pick up steam again for the final quarter of the season as a thrilling 1st half performance versus Southampton saw them go 3-0 up and win the game by that score line, before sharing 1-1 draws with Chelsea and Stoke City respectively. Not even back-to-back defeats to Arsenal and Manchester City could derail the morale at the London Stadium as they finished the season on a high; beating both Leicester City and then Everton on the final day of the season, while also holding Manchester United to a goalless draw to secure a 13th place finish.
