DESCRIPTION:

Finishing 2nd was not the only parallel from the 1990-91 season; Adidas would recreate another grey away strip for Liverpool, and this piece will remain every bit in the memory as its predecessor; in no small part due to its presence in the legendary 4-1 win at Old Trafford on March 14th 2009! The grey would be split in a chequered fashion, divided by two shades of grey and would also be supplemented with red accents to create a fantastic take on a classic shirt!

THE SEASON:

After an encouraging end to the 2007-08 season which saw the club lose just once in their last 15 league games and reach the Champions League semi-final; Liverpool would strengthen significantly in the summer with the signings of: Andrea Dossena, Robbie Keane and Albert Riera. A first league win over Manchester United since 2004 and set the tone for Liverpool’s most fierce title challenge since 1991! ‘The Reds’ would end the 2008 portion of the season losing just once and leading the table. Liverpool would spectacularly defeat Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, before hammering the Spanish champions 4-0! 4 days later, they would go one better and defeat Manchester United 4-1 at Old Trafford! Despite winning 10 of their last 11 games, they would fall short of United by 4 points, collecting 86 points; the highest points total for a team to accumulate without winning the Premier League.

The notable players that season were:

Fernando Torres, Robbie Keane, David N’Gog, Dirk Kuyt, Ryan Babel, Jermaine Pennant, Yossi Benayoun, Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso, Javier Mascherano, Lucas Leiva, Daniel Agger, Jamie Carragher, Martin Skrtel, Alvaro Arbeloa, Sami Hypia, Fabio Aurelio, Andrea Dossena, Pepe Reina
