DESCRIPTION:
After the controversial half and half home shirt that was utilised in 2019-20 comes this fellow eccentric entry courtesy of Adidas! While reverting back to the classic black and white striped attire; the white base of the shirt is met by a first – painted black stripes! Another first is the use of gold as the main tertiary colours of the shirt, with gold being used for the Adidas embroidery, club crest and the Jeep decal. This shirt also sees the return of a v-neck collar for the first time since the 2015-16 season, even if it is more reminiscent of the 2013-14 home shirt made by Nike. This shirt would debut in Juventus’ 3-1 defeat to Roma on the final day of the 2019-20 season, and would then feature in Juve’s unsuccessful challenge at overturning their 1st Leg deficit against Lyon in the Last 16 of the Champions League. More synonymously however, would be the shirt with the Andrea Pirlo tenureship where they won both the Supercoppa Italiana and Coppa Italia; albeit at the expense of relinquishing the league title. This would also be the home shirt used in Cristiano’s Ronaldo’s final (full) season with the club and was the last to be donned by Miralem Pjanic. This season would also mark the first time Serie A used a unified font, and this shirt also features a printed Scudetto shield.
THE SEASON:
As widely predicted, even before the coronavirus pandemic swept the world and halted the 2019-20 Serie A season; Maurizio Sarri and Juventus parted ways at the end of the season. While the former Napoli and Chelsea coach was able to retain the Serie A crown after an intense 4 way dance with Inter, Atalanta and Lazio; failures in the Supercoppa Italiana, Coppa Italia and a disappointing Last 16 exit from the Champions League saw club legend - Andrea Pirlo brought in as his surprise replacement in what his first ever managerial assignment!
The deal to exchange Miralem Pjanic with FC Barcelona’s – Arthur was already a done deal in June 2020, however, Pirlo would also see the deals for – Weston McKennie, Alvaro Morata and Federico Chiesa green lit, while Dejan Kulusevski returned from his exciting season loan at Parma.
The 2020-21 Serie A season would finally kick off for Juventus on 20th September 2020, and in front of 1,000 fans at the Allianz Stadium; Pirlo would get off to a winning start as he oversaw a 3-0 win over Sampdoria to begin their 8th straight title defence. Although his Juventus side would go unbeaten in their first 13 games of the season; the run was made of 6 draws and just 7 wins; leaving them 4 points off the pace. He would taste defeat in the league for the first time in Juve’s final game of 2020 when they were beaten 3-0 at home against Fiorentina on 22nd December.
2021 began with 3 straight victories, including a 3-1 win at San Siro over league leaders – AC Milan on 6th January! Only Internazionale and Napoli claimed the scalps of Juventus victories in their opening 9 league games of the year as the defending champions won the other 7 outs. Patches of 2 and 3 win runs would be met by dropped points as Inter began to run away with 1st place; seemingly leaving Juve in a battle with Milan for 2nd place. Napoli and Atalanta’s strong form in the final quarter of the season saw positions: 2nd to 5th open to all four clubs and on the final day of the season, just 3 points separated all four clubs! Buoyed by their stunning 3-2 win over Internazionale on Match-Day #37; Juventus would comfortably beat Bologna 4-1 to condemn Napoli to 5th place and secure 4th for themselves!
While Juventus would have to come to terms with not winning the Scudetto for the first time since the 2010-11 season; the domestic cup competitions yielded a pair of successes in what was 180 from the previous season on the domestic circuit! On 21st January 2021, Juve avenged their 2020 Coppa Italia Final defeat to Napoli when they beat them 2-0 to win the 2020-21 Supercoppa Italiana, and then on 19th May, they would regain the Coppa Italia after seeing off Atalanta 2-1 in an intense final!
The Champions League would unfortunately represent a very similar tale of disappointment as they suffered in the previous season when they crashed out again in the Last 16, once again versus underdog opposition in the form of FC Porto. Their Group Stage form was quite spectacular – winning 5 games from 6, including a 3-0 win over Barcelona at the Camp Nou on 8th December 2020 to finish 1st place! Away Goals however would be their undoing once again in the Last 16 as a 2-1 1st Leg defeat away from home meant that the 3-2 win over Porto at home on 9th March was not enough to progress to the quarter final,
