DESCRIPTION:
Adidas in their second season as Juventus’ kit supplier would continue the trend of dazzling alternative jerseys for the ‘Bianconeri’ and joining the pink shirt and black and gold shirts of legend of 2015-16 would be this stunning 3rd shirt! Paying homage to clubs ‘La Zebre’ moniker; this shirt uses a zebra stripe pattern down the sleeves against a white backdrop to create a one of a kind Juventus shirt! With Adidas’ new templates now implementing their signature 3-stripes down the side panels; this allowed them to dedicate the entirety of the sleeves to the zebra pattern! This shirt would be worn sparingly given how close the colours were to the home shirt, however, it would be synonymous with 2 victories – the 2-0 victory over FC Porto in the 2nd Leg of their UEFA Champions League clash in Porto on the 22/02/2017 and on the final day of the 2016/17 Serie A season when Juve defeated Bologna 2-1 on the 27/05/2017 thanks to Moise Kean’s 94th minute winner!
THE SEASON:
Despite a 2015-16 season being one of transition following the departures of – Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal and Carlos Tevez all at once; Massimiliano Allegri’s side were still able to stave off the fierce challenges of Napoli and Roma to win Serie A for the 5th season in a row and successfully retain the Coppa Italia trophy! The Serie A success was quite the display as they recovered from just 3 wins in their opening 10 games to win 25 of their next 26 league games! However, after the ecstasy of reaching the final of the UEFA Champions League in 2015; the club would have to taste elimination in the Last 16 when they met Bayern Munich in an epic 6-4 slug fest!
The summer transfer window would be quite the event for the club as they sold Paul Pogba back to Manchester United for a world transfer record fee of €105 million! Alvaro Morata, Simone Zaza and Roberto Pereyra would also depart the club. The funds would be invested spectacularly as: Miralem Pjanic, Dani Alves, Medhi Benatia and Gonzalo Higuain were all signed, and Juan Cuadrado’s loan spell from Chelsea was also made permanent!
There would be no slow start this season from the champions, and although they may have lost 3 games in the 2016 segment of the season, they would also win no less than 14; claiming wins over their nearest challengers – Roma and Napoli along the way to end 2016 with a 7 point cushion at the top of the table. The champions would save their best work for 2017 however; going unbeaten in 14 consecutive games between 22/01/17 to 06/05/17. A slight blip towards the end of the season allowed the league table to look closer than it should have been, in the end however, Juventus would claim a 6th Scudetto in a row as they held off Roma and Napoli by 4 and 5 points respectively!
In the domestic cup competitions; Juventus would relinquish the Supercoppa Italiana to AC Milan when they were beaten 4-3 on penalties in the December 23rd showcase in Doha, Qatar. There would however, be a 3rd successive Coppa Italia triumph as they warded off the murderers row of: Atalanta, AC Milan, Napoli and then Lazio to win the Italian Cup for a 12th time!
The squad that was put together for an assault at the Champions League would look unstoppable until the final hurdle… Comfortably navigating Group H that also featured: Sevilla, Lyon and Dinamo Zagreb; they would eliminate FC Porto in the Round of 16 before setting up a quarter final clash with FC Barcelona in what was a rematch of the ill-fated 2015 final. In a statement making performance; Juventus would crush Barca 3-0 on aggregate to meet AS Monaco in the semi-final in what was the repeat of their semi-final meeting in 1998. Juventus would overcome the impressive Monaco to set up a final against the holders – Real Madrid in what was also a repeat of the 1998 final. Juventus would come from a goal behind to go into half time 1-1 thanks to Mario Mandzukic’s incredible overhead kick equaliser, however, a 2nd half capitulation of epic proportion would see Real Madrid prevail 4-1 on June 3rd 2017 in Wales!
