DESCRIPTION:
Nike and Juventus’ 8th season in tandem would yield an altogether different home shirt from its predecessors to enter the decade of the 2010’s! In what was only their second home shirt to use a collar; this shirt would lean heavily on black accents, making it the first to do since the 2005-06 home shirt. The standout feature however, was the use of serrated stripes as opposed to classic block stripes. This season would also be the first to use the Bet Clic sponsor which would take the place of New Holland Fiat Group sponsor. Whilst the club would only manage a disappointing 7th place league finish, this would be the first Juventus home shirt to have been worn by Leonardo Bonucci, Simone Pepe and Andrea Barzagli and the last to be worn by the legendary David Trezeguet before the club moved into their new home of the Juventus Stadium!
THE SEASON:
A very difficult decade of the 2000’s for Juventus which had already included a Champions League Final defeat and then the club’s disgraceful relegation from Serie A following the ‘Calciopoli’ scandal of 2006 would culminate in the 2009-10 season by finishing in 7th place - the club’s worst league finish since 1998-99.
The season which began with such huge promise as club legend – Ciro Ferrara retained his position as head coach, while there were big money signings of Brazilian duo – Diego and Felipe Melo while Fabio Cannavaro also returned to the club; however, 12 months on, and Ferrara had already been replaced by Alberto Zaccheroni in January, while Diego returned to Germany and Cannavaro left Serie A behind for the riches of the UAE. There were also departures for: Cristian Molinaro, Domenico Criscito, Martin Caceres, Sebastian Giovinco, Christian Poulsen, Albin Ekdal, Tiago, Jonathan Zebina and legendary duo – Mauro Camoranesi and David Trezeguet!
Zaccheroni himself would be replaced by Luigi delneri ahead of the 2010-11 season after he guided Sampdoria to an impressive 4th place finish in 2009-10 and he would be given the acquisitions of: Armand Traore, Alberto Aquilani (loan), Marco Motta, Simone Pepe, Fabio Quagliarella, Milos Krasic and Leonardo Bonucci to help restore ‘La Vecchia Signora’ to her former glory in the new decade of the 2010’s!
The new campaign would begin with a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Bari, followed by a draw with Sampdoria before getting their first win of the season when they saw off Udinese, they would then fall to defeat to Palermo; however despite their poor opening 4 games, the ‘Bianconeri’ would enjoy a stellar 2010 portion of the season; going unbeaten for the rest of the year in the league with a run of 7 wins and 6 draws to end the year as the league’s top scorers in 4th place and just 5 points adrift of league leaders – AC Milan!
Sadly, 2011 would get off to the worst possible start as they fell in back to back games to Parma and then Napoli. This would be a familiar story in 2011 as Juve fell to 7 defeats in their first 11 games of the year to see their hopes of Champions League qualification essentially diminish. Finally turning the corner in the final quarter of the season, Juventus would win 4 of their remaining 10 games, however, they would again finish in a disappointing 7th place for a second consecutive season. Intrestingly, the 2-2 draw with Napoli on the final day of the season would also be the last ever game played Juventus at the Stadio Olimpico Torino!
In the cup competitions, there would be little respite for the Juventus faithful as they would witness their team fall in the Last 16 of the Coppa Italia once more, with Roma eliminating them, and then in the UEFA Europa League; after navigating the qualifying rounds they would end up drawing in all 6 of their Group Stage games, Juventus would exit the competition in the Group Stage as they failed to defeat any of: Red Bull Salzburg, Lech Poznan or Manchester City.
