DESCRIPTION:

Paris Saint Germain dominated the football world in the summer of 2017 as they changed the face of football transfers forever with their €222 million signing of Neymar from Barcelona! In what may go down as one of the sports finest ever trio of shirts to be released for a club in a single season; this sensational black ensemble joined the glorious redcurrant and indigo home strip came the vivid yellow number used as the away kit! Once again deviating from the traditional use of either white or red as the club’s alternate colours; this attire was of a successor to the sensational 3rd kit which was used in 2015-16, albeit without the pink accents. In the 2017-18 Nike equipped the elite club’s they supplied the kits for each with an incredible templated shirt in what was one of the better uses of a default template across the board. PSG were given the black and white expression, topped off by the word – PARIS adoring the back of the shirt in shiny black vinyl! It was only fitting and ironic that these truly legendary strips for the club coincided with the arrival of the Brazilian superstar Neymar in his world record transfer. This would also be the final series of shirts to be worn by 2 of the early stalwarts of the Nasser Al-Khelaifi era: Thiago Motta and Javier Pastore as well as Lucas Moura.

THE SEASON:

Unai Emery would be granted reprieve from execution after his debut season ONLY yielded the domestic cup titles, not did Monaco stump them to the title, but there was the infamous ‘Remontada’ episode from the Champions League. That event would inspire the powers that be at the Parc de Princes to pull off the most audacious transfer coup in football history when they evoked Neymar’s release clause of €222 million to secure his services from Barcelona!

The second tentacle of the legendary ‘2017-PSG-Summer-Spree’ was the acquisition of French football’s most talented prospect: Kylian Mbappe. The 19 year old had taken the football world by storm in 2017 with his incredible performances in the Champions League and his 15 goals in 29 Ligue 1 games to help Monaco become champions. If that wasn’t enough, defensive recruits: Yuri and the legendary Dani Alves were also acquired.

Any notion of another slump was quickly put to bed as PSG defeated Monaco 2-1 to successfully retain the Trophée des Champions! PSG would enjoy going unbeaten in their first 15 league games, winning 13 of those contests, and then in 2018, they would put together a 9 match winning run en route to thwarting Monaco 7-1 on April 15th to successfully regain the Ligue 1 title!

Only a sluggish end to the season (once the title had been wrapped up) prevented them from surpassing their 96 point haul from 2015-16, however, they did score 108 times in the league which was 6 more times than that season. In the cup competitions, Paris Saint Germain were incomparable as they successfully retained both the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue to complete a domestic quadruple as they did in 2014-15 and 2015-16 respectively.

Sadly, Neymar would suffer a season ending injury which coincided with their Champions League Last 16 exit at the hands of Real Madrid, however, in the Group Stage, Unai Emery’s side would score 25 goals en route to topping Group B ahead of Bayern Munich. They would however finish the season on a high in Unai Emery’s final game in charge, he delivered the domestic quadruple with a 2-0 win in the Coupe de France Final!

Edinson Cavani scored 38 times, Neymar supplied 28 goals in just 30 appearances, while both Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria scored 21 times apiece in all competitions! The European failure to Real Madrid however was the final slate for Unai Emery who dismissed from his post at the end of the season.

The notable players that season were:

Hatem Ben Arfa, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar Jr, Edinson Cavani, Julian Draxler, Angel Di Maria, Javier Pastore, Giovani Lo Celso, Lassana Diarra, Christopher Nkunku, Marco Verratti, Adrien Rabiot, Yuri Berchiche, Dani Alves, Thomas Meunier, Thilo Kehrer, Presnel Kimpembe, Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Layvin Kurzawa, Alphonse Areola, Kevin Trapp
