DESCRIPTION:

Adidas’ second iteration of Wolverhampton Wanderers home shirt would adorn the Black-Country based side into Europe in 2019-20 and what a fine shirt it was! Using their riveting 2-tone template which was used so successfully by teams in 2018-19; they would save one of their best expressions of the design for Wolves as two shades of the golden amber tones synonymous with the club were supplemented by minimal black accents. This would also be the first season for Wolves to bear the ManBetX sponsorship, and it was yet another brilliant season for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side as they finished in 7th place again and reached the quarter final of the Europa League! This would also be the final shirt of ‘The Wanderers’ to be worn by modern club legends – Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota as they joined Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool respectively!

THE SEASON:

In their return to the Premier League, following a 6 season absence from the top-flight, would exceed all expectations as they finished 7th in 2018-19! In doing so, they punched their ticket to the Europa League, but the question is always – would they suffer the infamous second season syndrome?

Raul Jimenez transfer from Benfica was made permanent after a great first season when on loan, meanwhile, there was also notable signings of: Leander Dendoncker, Patrick Cutrone and Pedro Neto to join the very exciting Wolves squad!

Their first 8 games of the season would be the antithesis of their previous season as they failed to win in any of their opening 6! However, a stunning 2-0 win away against Manchester City on October 6th really got their league season going and by the time the league was paused in March 2020, they were just 5 points away from 4th place. Following ‘Project Restart’ in June, Wolves would continue their great form to finish in 7th place for the second season in a row!

Elsewhere, all eyes were on how Wolves would perform in the Europa League and they would represent England admirably as they began their season in July 2019 in qualification and overcame: Crusaders, Pyunik and Torino to reach the Group Stage. Only Braga would claim points against Wolves as Nuno’s side finished 2nd. Eliminations of Espanyol and Olympiacos set the stage for a quarter final showdown with eventual winners competition – Sevilla; bowing out 1-0 thanks to an 88th minute goal!

The notable players that season were:

Raúl Jiménez, Patrick Cutrone, Diogo Jota, Adama Traoré, Daniel Podence, Rúben Neves, Pedro Neto, Romain Saïss, Leander Dendoncker, João Moutinho, Rúben Vinagre, Jonny, Willy Boly, Conor Coady, Ryan Bennett, Jesús Vallejo, Matt Doherty, Rui Patrício
