DESCRIPTION:

12 months after breaking the world transfer record; now with a series of World Cup winners in their ranks, Paris Saint Germain would again set the football world alight with their relationship with Jordan! The brand synonymous with global style and culture would partner with the French champions to brand their kits used in the Champions League, and the results were nothing short of spectacular! The addition of the retro American football style font only adds to the class of majesty of these strips! The black home edition was worn in the clash with Liverpool at Anfield but will be remembered most for when Neymar donned the strip during his virtuoso performance at home to Red Star in the 6-1 victory on Match-Day 2! This kit was used in all but one PSG’s Group Stage games as they qualified in 1^st place out of one of the ‘Groups of Death’!

THE SEASON:

Thomas Tuchel was the man chosen by the powers that be at the Parc des Princes to lead Paris Saint Germain into the 2018-19 season and beyond, with the plug being on Unai Emery’s stint after just 2 seasons. Back-to-back to Last 16 exits from the Champions League were likely the main reason that alluded to his departure, including the infamous ‘Remontada’ episode against Barcelona in 2017.

After their sensational summer spend in 2017, 2018 was much quieter, with Kylian Mbappe’s ‘loan’ made permanent for the agreed sum of €180 million; Thilo Kehrer was signed from Schalke for €37 million, while Juan Bernat was sourced from Bayern Munich for €5 million. They were joined by the free transfer acquisitions of: Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and the legendary Gianluigi Buffon from Juventus.

The new amendments made to the qualification entry for the Champions League ahead of the 2018-19 season ensured that there would be some very interesting group stage meetings, and PSG found themselves in one of the ‘Groups of Death’ as they had to navigate past Red Star Belgrade, Napoli and last season’s finalists: Liverpool in Group C!

They began the competition with the ultimate litmus test: a European night at Anfield! Liverpool and their mythical home claimed Thomas Tuchel’s Dortmund as a victim in an epic Europa League quarter final in 2016, and Liverpool would need just 36 minutes to go 2-0 up! Thomas Meunier and Neymar thought they had salvaged a point until Roberto Firmino scored a 92^nd minute winner to gift Liverpool a 3-2 win!

Fortunately, with Napoli and Red Star drawing, PSG could make up ground on Match-Day 2 with the visit of Red Star. PSG led 4-0 by the interval, with Neymar eventually scoring a hat-trick in a 6-1 demolition of the Serbian side!

They would welcome group leaders Napoli to the Parc des Princes on October 24^th and would need a stoppage time intervention of their own as Angel Di Maria 3^rd minute equaliser salvaged a point in a 2-2 draw!

Napoli’s San Paolo is almost as atmospheric as Anfield, and Liverpool found out first hand when they were beaten by Carlo Ancelotti’s side on Match-Day 2! Fortunately, for PSG, they shared the spoils with the Italian outfit in a 1-1 draw on November 6^th. Interestingly, Liverpool would lose away to Red Star, which meant that both them and Napoli had 6 points, PSG with 5 and Red Star with 4.

Match-Day 4 was the crucial home fixture against Liverpool, and in a must win affair for the French champions; they defeated the visitors 2-1 on November 26^th to move into 2^nd place ahead of the final outings of the group.

Only an incredible sequence of events elsewhere and defeat in their own game would deny them a place in the Last 16, however, they made sure they not only qualified, but finished first as they defeated Red Star Belgrade 4-1 in the Serbian capital! Liverpool would ultimately join them as the 2nd place side following their victory over Napoli.

PSG’s opponents in the Last 16 were Manchester United. At the time of the draw, United were a side brutally out of form, in fact their manager: Jose Mourinho was sacked 24 hours after the draw had been made! By the time the 2 sides met for the 1^st Leg at Old Trafford on February 12^th; United, now under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s management, were unbeaten in 11 games, meanwhile PSG had crucially lost Neymar to injury on the eve of the Last 16. Still, it mattered not as PSG cruised to a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe (both assisted by former United player: Angel Di Maria which led to unsavour scenes between him and the home supporters), and to add further insult to injury; Paul Pogba was also sent off for the hosts, ruling him out of the second leg!

March 6^th came and United with nothing to lose took the game instantly to PSG; going 1-0 up inside of 2 minutes thanks to a Romelu Lukaku strike! Juan Bernat pulled PSG level shortly after, meaning United would need 2 without reply to pull off the unlikely upset. Lukaku would add a 2^nd before the break, and then in the most inauspicious of circumstances; Presnel Kimpembe was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area, yielding a 92^nd minute penalty for United! Marcus Rashford would convert the spot-kick to complete this most unlikely of upsets and relegate PSG to a 3^rd consecutive Last 16 exit from the competition!
