DESCRIPTION:
In Adidas’ second season as Olympiacos Piraeus’ kit manufacturer; the template most synonymous with Germany when they won the World Cup in 2014 would be reprised and grey would be the colour of choice used – in what was just the third time in the 21st century that grey was chosen as ‘Thrylos’s alternate colours. This edition like its predecessors would be an aesthetic all towards its own with charcoal used for the main body, while lighter shades of grey were used to decorate the chevron and then a dark shade of red would then colour the accents including the Adidas embroidery, the three stripes down the sleeves and the v-neck collar. Unlike many of the other teams Adidas’s provide the kits for in 2016-17; none of the strips they produced for Olympiacos used the Adidas three stripes down the side panels – sticking with the traditional use of the three stripes down the sleeves. The 2016-17 season would see the defending champions of Greece use a total of four managers; nevertheless, the team would go on to on to match the record they set previously by winning a seventh straight Greek Championship!
THE SEASON:
Marco Silva would end his sole season at the helm of Olympiacos by securing a sixth successive Super League Greece title in what was an incredible 85 point haul where they won 28 of their league games; setting the Greek top-flight points record for a 30 game season with 85 points and they also came within a whisker of helping the club complete the league and cup double for a second season running!
Silva however would depart for England ahead of the 2016-17 season and Victor Sanchez would return the club as the team’s manager after serving as assistant manager between 2013-15 however he would be replaced by Paulo Bento as recent as 11th August! New signings included: Diogo Figueiras, Constantino Lafis, Bruno Viana, Andre Martins, Alaixys Romao, Marko Marin, Tarik Elyounoussi, Oscar Cardozo.
The 2016-17 Super League Greece season would not start until September 2016 after the first international break of the season, and they would start with Match-Day 3 opponents - Veria at home on 11th September where they would prevail 6-1 before seeing off Iraklis seven days later. A 1-0 defeat away to Larissa on 25th September would be the club’s first defeat in the league since losing to AEK Athens back in February. This would set the stage for an incredible unbeaten run that spanned 17 games! That run would start with a run of five victories including the scalps of fierce rivals – AEK and Panathinaikos before being held by a goalless draw at home to Kassiopi. This game would be the first time Olympiacos dropped points at the Karaiskakis Stadium since the 2-2 draw with PAS Giannna on 6th December 2014; thus, ending the club’s 24 match home winning streak in the league!
January 2017 saw the Match-Day 1 and 2 games played against Asteras Tripolis and Xanthi respectively, and the pair of fixtures would yield another six points to complete another string of five wins and by the end of January to open up a 13 point lead at the top of the table with just 12 more games remaining. There would be a sting in the tale however in February and March 2017, where the team stumbled on a run of four losses in a span of five games. That run would include defeats to AEK, Panathinaikos, PAOK and Panionios – who had now negated the gap at the top to just 6 points. Moreover the defeat to PAOK which made it three defeats on the spin would cost Paulo Bento his job, and Vasilis Vousaz would oversee the defeat to Panathinaikos on 19th March before he was the interim vacancy was filled in by Takis Lemonis – who returned to the club for his third spell. He would steady the ship by winning 4 of their remaining 5 games to secure the club’s 44th Greek league title and complete another record 7 successive champion wins!
The quest for a 20th Greek FA Cuo and a 12th league and cup double would again end in misery for Olympiacos as they would bow out in the semi-final. The Group Stage would end with 3 wins from 3, and then Aris and Atromitos would be seen off in the Round of 16 and Quarter Finals respectively before they met the defending champions and the side that defied in the final in 2016 – AEK Athens. Olympiacos would suffer the heartbreak of an away goals exit after drawing 2-2 on aggregate.
