DESCRIPTION:

After tradition inspired Real Madrid’s home shirt in 2012-13, it was straight back to the present in 2013-14 as Adidas unearthed in our opinion one of their finest expressions of Real Madrid’s home shirt! With Fly Emirates taking over from Bwin as the club’s main shirt sponsor, this shirt would utilise orange and grey as the secondary and tertiary colours of the classic white for the first time! Additional nuances came from the use of shiny grey thin horizontal stripes, while a classic hoop collar without any striking features or adaptations was always employed for the first time in their tenure! If this shirt wasn’t already an artistic masterpiece, this classic strip will always remain etched into the minds of ‘Madristas’ as they won both the Copa del Rey and secured the elusive ‘La Decima’ Champions League victory in 2014 – defeating their most fierce rivals: Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the respective final’s! This would also be the last Real Madrid home shirt to be worn officially by Mesut Ozil, Xabi Alonso and Angel Di Maria, and unofficially for both Kaka and Gonzalo Higuain who wore the shirt during pre-season before their respective moves to AC Milan and Napoli in the summer of 2013!

THE SEASON:

The disappointing 2012-13 season would culminate with Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho parting ways after 3 seasons together. After winning the Supercopa de Espana, Real Madrid’s title defence would unravel after a poor 2012. The biggest disappointment however, would be a third straight UEFA Champions League semi-final exit, where they were dramatically beaten in the semi-final by Borussia Dortmund. Still, their 2013 was quite terrific as they won 16 of their 21 league games, losing just once, as well as reaching the final of the Copa del Rey.

It would be the biggest summer of change at the club since their legendary summer of 2009, with Carlo Ancelotti replacing Mourinho as the club’s manager, meanwhile the club broke the world transfer record as they did that summer; ending the summer’s longest running transfer saga when they signed Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur for €100 million! Joining Bale at the Bernabeu would also be: Dani Carvajal, Isco and Asier Ilarramendi. There would naturally be players who move in the other direction and there were significant departures in the form of: Ricardo Carvalho, Jose Callejon, Raul Albiol, Gonzalo Higuain, Kaka and Mesut Ozil!

The Ancelotti-era began with a 2-1 win at home against Real Betis on 18/08/13 to kick off the new season, and he managed the team to 5 wins and a draw in his opening 6 games, however, defeat in the Madrid-Derby next would end his unbeaten start as their neighbours let them know they ought to be taken seriously in the title mix. Although they would stumble to defeat in El Clasico versus Barcelona on 26/10/13, from there, Real Madrid would go on an absolute tear as they won 15 of their next 18 games in the league, and after the 3-0 win over Elche on 22/04/14, ‘Los Blancos’ would finally occupy 1st place in an incredible three way dance at the top of the table!

On 23/03/14, they had the opportunity create a 6-point gap between themselves and Barcelona, however, they would fall to a 4-3 defeat in an epic showdown, which was then followed up by a 2-1 defeat against Sevilla to lose the initiative in the title race. In the end, a treble bid would prove too much for Real Madrid to sustain as they finished in 3rd place – level on points with 2nd place Barcelona and just 3 points shy of eventual champions – Atletico Madrid.

After the previous season’s Copa del Rey Final heartbreak, Carlo Ancelotti’s side started with a embarrassing 0-0 draw with Olimpic de Xativa in the 1st Leg, from there, they would all of their next 8 games en route to reclaiming the title! Most notably, they would avenge their loss in the final to Atletico by beating them 5-0 on aggregate in the semi-final, before, overcoming Barcelona 2-1 in their rematch of the 2011 Final; this game would feature Gareth Bale’s legendary solo goal to win the game in the 85th minute!

The world transfer record was no doubt broken with one thing in mind – winning their 10th UEFA Champions League title! 2002 was the last time they were crowned as continental champions, and the road to Lisbon in 2014 began with a very strong group that also featured: FC Copenhagen, Galatasaray and Juventus! The 9x winners of the competition were electrifying as they went undefeated and won 5/6 to top the group and set up a Last 16 tie versus Schalke 04. The famed ‘BBC’ trio of – Bale, Benzema and Cristiano established themselves as the most feared attack in world football with this 9 goal aggregate demolition of the German side!

After their 9-2 win over 2-legs, they would be given the opportunity to avenge their defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the 2013 semi-final, and they would escape by the skin of their teeth with a 3-2 aggregate win. Waiting for them in the semi-final was another European Super-Clasico against Bayern Munich! Bayern, now led by former adversary – Pep Guardiola, were considered the favourites to win the title, however, Real Madrid overcame their heart-breaking eliminations at the hands of Bayern in 2007 and 2012 with an emphatic 5-0 aggregate victory which included a 4-0 win at the Allianz Arena!

In the final, they would meet the thorn in their side domestically – Atletico Madrid, with their city rivals winning the 2013-14 La Liga title. The Lisbon Final would see Atletico take an early lead and come within seconds of ending Real Madrid’s ‘Decima’ dream, before Sergio Ramos netted a 93rd minute equaliser to drag the game into extra-time! From there, destiny awaited ‘Los Blancos’ as they ran rampant over their opponents, eventually winning the game 4-1 to become 10x champions of Europe!
