DESCRIPTION:
Umbro’s penultimate home shirt as England’s kit supplier was introduced ahead of the 2012 European Championships qualifying campaign and although it was only used for 14 months – this render was followed in the suit of its predecessor as a classy, stylish and minimalist football shirt made in the ‘Tailored by Umbro’ mould that they released to usher the decade of the 2010’s. The key changes however, saw the polo collar updated to a deep henley, while the red accents were replaced by blue accents and there was of course the inclusion of the St Geroge’s crossed which were embroidered on the back in different colours, while grey was also subtly included as the tertiary colour. This cycle would see England enjoy another unbeaten qualification campaign as they finished 1st in Group G and would suffer only the sole defeat in all 13 games of the cycle against France in a friendly on 17th November 2010. This would also be the last home shirt to worn by the country under Fabio Capello’s management before the Italian sensationally left his post in early February 2012.
THE SEASON(S):
The road to overcoming the disappointment of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa began with the 2-1 win over Hungary in August, however, the real test began with their pair of fixtures in September as qualification for the European Championship commenced – starting with clashes against Bulgaria and Switzerland. ‘The Three Lions’ would impress as they beat Bulgaria 4-0 and then overcame Switzerland 3-1 in Basel. 2010 however, would end on a disappointing note as they were held to a goalless draw away against Montenegro before falling 2-1 to France in a glamour friendly at Wembley on 17th November.
The 2011 cycle of fixtures started with a come-from-behind victory over Denmark on 9tH February, before beating Wales in Cardiff to resume qualifying duties on 26th March. Back to back draws with Ghana and Switzerland did nothing to stop England from marching on to a pair of wins over Bulgaria and Wales in September to seal their place at Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine – making their 2-2 draw away against Montenegro inconsequential. By avoiding defeat in the Balkans however, they would enjoy a 100% unbeaten qualifying campaign with 5 wins and 3 draws.
The pair of November friendlies ensured that England remained unbeaten in all 9 games in 2011 – defeating World and European champions – Spain and then Sweden by 1-0 score-lines. Unbeknownst to anyone at the time, however, the 1-0 win over Sweden on 15th November at Wembley Stadium would be Fabio Capello’s final game in charge of the national side.
