DESCRIPTION:

If Adidas’ presentation of Real Madrid’s home shirt in 2008-09 was more of a classic deign with its minimal accents and folded collar; the 2009-10 season shirt was definitely a modern contemporary effort, with its use of a slightly higher than normal hoop collar and yellow tertiary colour! It was a truly fitting design ahead of a season that saw Real Madrid break the world transfer record twice in a matter of weeks as they delivered: Kaka, Karim Benzema, Xabi Alonso and Cristiano Ronaldo in that unforgettable summer of 2009! This shirt would be synonymous with Real’s epic tussle with Barcelona for the 2009-10 La Liga title, where they would achieve an incredible 96 points – the most ever accumulated by a side not to win the title in Spain! This would also be the last Real Madrid shirt to be worn by two of club’s most cherished sons – Guti and Raul as they ended their long storied careers with the club to join Schalke 04 and Besiktas respectively!

THE SEASON:

Nobody could have forecasted the juggernaut that was Barcelona in the 2008-09 season and no-one suffered more than Real Madrid at the expense of the team the football world couldn’t stop gushing over after their incredible treble winning season. With Real dethroned of La Liga and Florentino Perez returning as the club’s president; the summer of 2009 was always going something incredible

The club didn’t disappoint as they left no stone unturned in the transfer market bringing in Manuel Pellegrini as manager and on the field, they would draft in: Esteban Granero, Raul Albiol, Alvaro Arbeloa, Xabi Alonso, Karim Benzema, Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo; the latter two players coming in at €67 million and €94 million respectively, making them the 2 most expensive ever footballers! With such as seismic series of arrivals, the previous project would effectively be disbanded as: Fabio Cannavaro, Javier Saviola, Gabriel Heinze, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben would all be moved on!

Cristiano Ronaldo wasted no time in settling in to his new surroundings as he scored in each of his first 4 league games, and his team would lead the way in the standings after 11 games! Defeats home and away to Barcelona would ultimately be their undoing again in the end as they would finish 2nd, despite racking up an incredible 96 points and winning 19 of their 23 league games in 2010!

Despite their incredible efforts in the league; disappointments in the cup competitions would spell the end of Pellegrini’s stay in charge as Jose Mourinho was drafted from Inter Milan ahead of the 2010-11 season, and after Ruud Van Nistelrooy left the club in January 2010; the 2009-10 season would also prove to be the last for Rafeal van der Vaart and the legendary pairing of: Guti and Raul!

The notable players that season were:

Raul, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Karim Benzema, Gonzalo Higuain, Cristiano Ronaldo, Guti, Rafael van der Vaart, Kaka, Xabi Alonso, Lassana Diarra, Mahamadou Diarra, Esteban Granero, Royston Drenthe, Alvaro Arbeloa, Marcelo, Raul Albiol, Sergio Ramos, Christoph Metzelder, Ezequiel Garay, Pepe, Marcos Alonso, Iker Casillas, Jerzy Dudek
