DESCRIPTION:
After the 2015-16 horizontal striped shirt Nike used for Barcelona’s home shirt; they went back into Barca’s illustrious history for the design of the 2016-17 home shirt as they created a throwback effort to the legendary 1989-92 home shirt! This was one of the more masterful adaptations of Nike’s 2016-17 season template with navy sleeves accompanying a vibrant blue base that features two thick red stripes. The respective stripes are then filled with pin-stripes just as the aforementioned 1989-92 Meyba designed shirt did! This shirt also features the 2015 FIFA Club World Cup shield and while the season was considered a disappointment; this home shirt would be synonymous with the club’s 3rd successive Copa del Rey triumph as well as the legendary ‘Remontada’ miracle in the Champions League against Paris Saint Germain and the incredible 3-2 victory over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu! This would also be the last season of Luis Enrique’s trophy laden era in charge of the club, and in a turn of events that nobody could have ever predicted – the final season of Neymar Jr as a Barcelona player!
THE SEASON:
Football Club Barcelona would end the 2015-16 season with another domestic double, however, another quarter final exit in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid’s resurgence towards the end of the season would prompt the club into a massive series of transfers in the summer. Denis Suarez, Samuel Umtiti, Lucas Digne, André Gomes, Jasper Cillessen and Paco Alcácer were the series of young and exciting talents that the club recruited in the summer of 2016!
The season began with a fine 6-2 win over Real Betis, where Leo Messi helped himself to a brace and Luis Suarez picked up where he left off last season with a fine hat-trick. A premonition of the struggles to come began to reveal themselves when newly promoted Deportivo Alaves stunned the champions 2-1 at Camp Nou on 10/09/16! Celta Vigo would upset them 4-3 on October 2nd, however, Barca would soon be back to their best as they reeled off a signature 19 game unbeaten run between 16/10/16 to 04/03/17! 2 defeats against Deportivo La Coruna and Malaga would cost Barcelona a 3rd successive La Liga title, where even-though they won an epic El Clasico 3-2 on 23/04/17, they would be pipped to the title by Real Madrid on the final day of the season by 3 points.
In the domestic cup competitions, it would be a perfect clean sweep for ‘Los Cules’ as they overcame Sevilla 5-0 on aggregate to regain the Supercopa de Espana title, and would over a hellacious Copa del Rey gauntlet that featured eliminations of – Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid before they swept Alaves aside 3-2 in the final to ensure that Luis Enrique was a Spanish Cup winner in all 3 seasons of his tenure!
Lastly, in the UEFA Champions League, it would be yet another disappointing quarter final exit after what was an incredible run to the Last 8 against Juventus. They would plunder 20 goals in the Group Stage as they eased past: Celtic, Manchester United and Borussia Monchengladbach. The Last 16 drew them against Paris Saint Germain where they overcame a 4-0 1st Leg deficit to win 5-1 in the 2nd Leg! The 3-0 defeat in the 1st Leg against Juventus would be too much to overcome as they bowed out at the quarter final for the 3rd time in 4 seasons.
