DESCRIPTION:

Following Adidas’ decision to make red the sole primary colour of Bayern Munich’s home kits from 2019 onwards, they would create a spectacular home strip that paid homage to the Allianz Arena’s iconic mesh pattern that lights up in red whenever ‘Die Rotten’ play! The shirt would utilise a series of red; with the shirt rotating 3 shades across the main body, sleeves, collar and Adidas 3-stripes; seemingly creating an upgrade of the 2015-16 home strip. The shorts follow this suit very much as they are the same colour as the sleeves while the 3 stripes remain the same shade as that of the shirt. This strip would cross the barrier of transition as it was the last to be worn by the legendary club trio: Rafinha, Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, and was worn during the legendary 2019-20 season where it last premiered in the 4-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen on June 6th 2020!

THE SEASON:

A fine debut season for Niko Kovac at the Bayern Munich helm saw him scoop up the triumvate of the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and DFB-Supercup titles! He was expected to do much better on his side’s poor Last 16 exit in the UEFA Champions League at the hands of eventual winners Liverpool, and he would be doing it now without the experience of: Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben; with the dynamic pairing leaving the club following their illustrious spells with the club. Fellow long term servant: Rafinha also bade the club farewell, while the club also cut their losses on both Renato Sanches and Mats Hummels, allowing the former to join Lille for €25 million, while Hummels returned back to Borussia Dortmund, and the decision was also made not to keep James Rodriguez permanently either.

Deals for the French World Cup winning pair of: Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez were already made during the 2018-19 season the latter becoming the club’s record signing at €80 million! Fellow Frenchman: Michael Cuisance was signed from Borussia Monchengladbach, and loan deals were struck to bring in high-profile names: Ivan Perisic and Phillipe Coutinho from Inter Milan and Barcelona respectively.

The season got underway in the DFL-Supercup showdown against Borussia Dortmund on August 3rd in what was their 6th pairing in this fixture during the decade of the 2010’s. Dortmund would stun Bayern 2-0 to tie the decade series at 3 wins apiece. 9 days later, they got their DFB-Pokal defence underway against Energie Cottbus with a routine 3-1 win in Cottbus. A Robert Lewandowski brace in their Bundesliga opener with Hertha Berlin was not enough to secure a win as the two sides played a 2-2 draw; a result that already had the eyebrows raised of some regarding Niko Kovac. The grudge match with Schalke ended 3-0 in favour of Bayern with Lewandowski netting a hat-trick and then Bayern would put Mainz to the sword in a 6-1 hammering to end the month.

The return from the international break would set the stage for a 1-1 draw away against RB Leipzig, and then Champions League duty commenced a few days after. They would be drawn in Group B with Red Star Belgrade, Olympiacos and the 2019 finalists: Tottenham Hotspur in what was a favourable group for the German side. Red Star were beaten 3-0 on Match-Day 1 to get the European campaign off the mark. FC Koln and Paderborn were then beaten in succession on the league front to keep them unbeaten after their opening 7 league games and on top of the BuLi by just the single point.

October started with the eagerly anticipated clash with Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Son Heung-Min gave the hosts an early lead, however, in an incredible turn of events; Bayern would prevail 7-2 with Serge Gnabry netting 4 goals in the rout! Yet just one day shy of a year to the day that Bayern last lost a league game at home (October 6th 2018); they would be felled 2-1 at home by Hoffenheim on October 5th 2019! A disappointing 2-2 draw with Augsburg on October 19th was less than ideal, however, ‘Die Rotten’ would end the month with wins over Union Berlin, VfL Bochum and Olympiacos in the league, cup and UCL respectively to ease some of the mounting pressure on Niko Kovac.

The 2-1 win over Bochum in the DFB-Pokal on October 29th would signal the end of Robert Lewandowski’s incredible scoring run! The Polish assassin had scored in each of his previous 13 games for Bayern in all competitions, already helping himself to 18 goals before the end of October!

November would begin with an embarrassing 5-1 defeat at the hands of Niko Kovac’s former club: Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga, and the defeat was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back as Kovac was dismissed from his post as Bayern Munich head coach. Hans-Dieter Flick was given the job on an interim basis from November 4th, and he would guide the team to a 2-0 victory at home against Olympiacos in his debut in the dugout. He would next be tasked with none other than the ‘Der Klassiker’ against Borussia Dortmund on November 9th. He would pass the test with flying colours as his Bayern side romped to a 4-0 win at the Allianz Arena! 2 weeks later, Fortuna Dusseldorf were also beaten 4-0, and then Red Star were beaten 6-0 in the Champions League in a game where Lewandowski scored times himself in! November would end with Flick suffering his first defeat in-charge of the club as Bayer Leverkusen claimed a shock 2-0 win over Bayern at the Allianz Arena on November 30th.

Up next was the trip to meet league leaders Borussia Monchengladbach at Borussia-Park on December 7th. Bayern would suffer back to back defeats in the league for the first time in 14 months as they were beaten 2-1. Little would anyone foreshadow that would be Bayern and Flick’s last ever defeat for the season…

This incredible unbeaten run of 30 consecutive games in all competitions began on December 11th 2019 when Tottenham Hotspur, now under the tutelage of Jose Mourinho, came to the Aliianz Arena in what was a dead rubber Match-Day 6 clash as Bayern had already secured 1st and Spurs 2nd respectively. Still, Bayern became just the 6th side in the history of the competition to win all 6 of their Group Stage games as they beat Spurs 3-1 to set up a Last 16 clash with Chelsea in 2020. 2019 would end on a high as the trio of: Werder Bremen, Freiburg and Wolfsburg were all beaten by an aggregate score of 11-2 to end 2019 in 3rd place and just 4 points adrift of 1st placed Leipzig.

2020 kicked off with a bang for the Bundesliga champions as they beat Hertha Berlin 4-0 in their Bundesliga return on January 19th, and then just 6 days later, Schalke were brutalised 5-0 at home! A busy February saw Bayern ready their 3-pronged assault at claiming another treble, and Mainz were put away on February 1st by a 3-1 score-line as Bayern took the initiative in Bundesliga for the first time since September. The defence of the cup yielded an incredible 4-3 victory over Hoffenheim on February 5th to reach the quarter final and then Bayern would have the opportunity to create real distance between themselves and 2nd place RB Leipzig, but the two sides could only battle to a goalless draw in their meeting at the Allianz Arena on February 9th. This game would be the last time Bayern failed to win a game in all competitions…

With the visit to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea taking place on February 25th, Hansi Flick’s side would beat the pairing of Koln and Paderborn, scoring 7 goals in the process as they met Chelsea for the first time since the 2013 UEFA Super Cup. A sensational 2nd half performance in their return to London saw Bayern cruise to a 3-0 win, leaving Chelsea needing a bigger miracle than the 2012 Finale to get past this Bayern machine. The month would be wrapped up with a 6-0 win away against Hoffenheim!

A Joshua Kimmich goal was enough to see off Schalke in their March 3rd quarter final of the DFB-Pokal and then Bayern would play their 2-0 win over Augsburg on March 8th before the league was postponed in wake of the global Covid-19 pandemic…

The Bundesliga was given the greenlight to restart on the weekend of May 16th, and Bayern picked up where they left off; beating Union Berlin 2-0 to stay in control of the Bundesliga. Despite the lack of competitive football, the games came thick and fast in order to facilitate the completion of the 2019-20 season, including the league, cup and Champions League, yet Bayern were commensurate to all challengers! Revenge on Frankfurt came in the form of a 5-2 win on May 23rd. The visit to Signal Iduna Park was next, with Dortmund just 4 points behind Bayern in what was likely the only obstacle between them and retaining the title. Joshua Kimmich would come up trumps yet again as his goal was enough to earn a 1-0 win over the challengers.

June saw DFB-Pokal action resume and Bayern placed themselves in the final for the 3rd season running as they avenged their defeat to Frankfurt in the 2018 final by beating them 2-1 on June 10th. An 8th successive Bundesliga title was made official on June 20th following their 3-1 defeat of Freiburg, and they would end the season with a 4-0 win away against Wolfsburg to reach 100 goals for the league season! They would win the season having not only gone unbeaten since December 14th, but also having won each of their last 13 league outings!

Bayern would take on Bayer Leverkusen in the 2020 DFB-Pokal Final which took place on July 4th. Bayern Munich would capture a record 20th DFB-Pokal title when they won 4-2 in Berlin. There would now be exactly 5 weeks to prepare for the 2nd Leg of their Champions League Last 16 clash with Chelsea at the Allianz Arena. Ahead of the contest, the reformatted conclusion to the competition would see the quarter final, semi final and final all played within a 10-day frame in Portugal, meaning there would be no more home or away legs. There was also the potential to have to do battle with the trio of Barcelona, Manchester City and Paris Saint Germain if they were to go all the way…

The clash with Chelsea was yet another painful experience for the English side as they beaten 4-1 in an empty Allianz Arena. It was indeed Barcelona who were next and in arguably the most stunning result in the history of the competition; Bayern destroyed Barcelona 8-2 at the Estadio da Luz on August 14th! Their semi-final opposition would be the surprise package of Olympique Lyonnais who left the trail of Juventus and Manchester City in their wake en route to the semi-final. Bayern would weather an early storm from a spirited Lyon side, but ultimately, they would prevail 3-0 on August 19th to place in the 2020 UEFA Champions League Final against Paris Saint Germain! A far-cry from the high-octane finale that was predicted; just 1 goal would decide the game, and it was in the form of Kingsley Coman’s 59th minute goal! With that 1-0 win Bayern Munich became the first ever side to win every single game of theirs in the Champions League and would go level with Liverpool on 6 European Cup triumphs as Hansi Flick’s side replicated their incredible 2012-13 season treble!
